Powder factory
"Moulin de Curtius" is a former water (hammer) mill near de Vesdre in Chaudfontaine (B) dating from the 16th. century. From 1596 on Jean Curtius -Commissioner of ammunition for the Spanish army of Philip II- has been transforming the mill for the production of powder for canons. He transformed the site in a kind of case-mate (which still can be seen in the name of the village) with a moat (a deviation canal from the river Vesdre so the factory was situated on a island) and fortifications. Relics of the moat can still be seen in front of the complex.
