Caphouse Colliery
|
The last working wooden coal mining headframe in Britain was at Caphouse Colliery in Yorkshire. Now forming the English National Coal Mining Museum, the headframe survives and the underground tours use the shaft to gain access to the workings. However, the cage is now wound with an electric winder via a hidden sheave under the roof below the sheaves.
This is a really good day out and I spent all day on site. Admission is free, including the underground tour which lasts 90 minutes.
