Preparing clay
|
At the William Blyth & Co tile works, Barton-Upon-Humber.
This is the only modern part of the works, but the machinery and techniques are still essentially tradition. After being mixed to the correct consistency, the clay is extruded from this machine. The operative then has to cut the clay (with a wire) into suitable sized lumps, which are then stored under damp tarpaulins until they are required for converting into tiles. Some idea of the consistency of the clay can be seen from the handprints on the lumps alread placed on the pallets.
